 ¤ Formation of ASI    Top
 

The idea of forming the Association of Surgeons was conceived in the year 1937 when All India Medical Conference was held in Madras. The eminent surgeons who attended the meeting felt that an Association was necessary to meet and exchange ideas between surgeons all over India. 

The Association was organised and registered as a Scientific Body in the year 1938 thanks to the efforts of eminent surgeons like Dr. A. Lakshmanswamy Mudaliar, Lt. Col. Pandalai, Dr. C. P. Viswanathan Menon, Dr. S. K. Joglekar, Dr. Mulgaonkar, Dr. Banerjee, Dr. R.N. Cooper and many others. The main objective of the Association is advancement of Science and art of Surgery and promotion of friendship among surgeons in India and abroad. In keeping with this objective a Memorandum of Association was drawn and registered with the Registrar of Companies, Madras.

A suitable emblem was also designed by the founders with two snakes in the middle of symbolize the healing aspect of Kundalini (Energy)in the Ancient Hindu Medicine with a Swastik symbol in the centre signifying the general well-being and happiness of mankind.

The motto of surgeons is "We Serve". This slogan has been adopted by the Association and it has been inscribed in the symbol in Sanskrit language. The symbols well taken and it has become a mark of respect among the surgical community.
